I am the Teaching

by Norb Yates

Perhaps you know me. I am the Toltec Teaching.

Many of you have taken me out on a date at least once. You have met me openly, or in secret. Perhaps you came because of my reputation, or perhaps there was something about me that caught your eye…a picture, a phrase, or an agreement. Whatever the initial attraction, some of you may have decided to take a closer look, to give me more than just a glance. Maybe you sensed I was worth holding on to, and took a chance on a more intimate relationship.
You came to me like a suitor slowly testing the waters of love. Perhaps you were moved to dive in headfirst and drink deeply of me, as some have. More likely, you waded in cautiously, until the truth became too ruthless for your comfort…and then you left me.

It might have been frustrating for you to feel my beauty and not to understand its source. Some of you danced with me in order to find my secrets and possess them completely. Between dances you would sneak away to visit old loves, to find comfort in their familiar words. But I am steady, loyal, and I am always there for lovers of truth. I am everywhere. In every sacred teaching, my message can be found.

All relationships change. Our love affair may have ended abruptly, but more often such affairs fade imperceptibly, leaving behind vague memories of good times together. You say nice things about me when others ask, and vow that someday you will summon the courage to look me up. And perhaps you will…

Whatever the outcome of our interlude together, we were both served by your willingness to be close to me. However you changed because of our time together, you have made the world a more beautiful place. I loved you then and I love you now. I love you selflessly. I remain yours, offering you an amazing journey, a life of complete freedom without apologies or excuses. All you risk are your stories…stories that steal your truth and leave you little or nothing in return.
Take as much of me as you can hold. Make my love a part of you, and then all of you. Take me for life’s sake. Take me for your sake. I am the Toltec teaching.
